This was one of my favourite shows of the year. I should have recognized that it was Bllitzen Trapper opening up, but i didnt, until the last song, “Wild Mountain Nation”. After a really good opening set, Sam and Sara followed that up with, what i thought, was a great performance. Sam Beam and sister Sara performed a few songs together before the rest of the band came out. After that the tempo picked up, and there are some nice jams throughout the show. Sam and Sara came back out for the encore and performed what has to be one of the most beautiful songs ive had the pleasure of hearing. “The Trapeze Swinger”, a nine minute ballad, sent some chills down my spine.

DBT & The Hold Steady brought the “Rock and Roll Means Well” tour to town last week. The show was great. The Hold Steady came out and played a solid set. They certainly got the place warmed up. DBT came out afterwards and continued with the rock. The recordings turned out ok. We werent allowed to bring in our mic stands so we improvised and taped our mics to the pillar at the back beside the soundboard. Enjoy.

Made my way to Rochester this past weekend to see Ryan Adams & The Cardinals play at the Auditorium. A very nice venue, in a very sketchy town. An armed security guard in the Wendy’s (the only place we could find to eat dinner at) was a first. Anyways, after eating we headed to the venue. Our seats were perfect. Dead centre, about halfway back just before the balcony overhang started. Though we didnt use our seats that much since everyone was standing. Ryan and crew got things started around 9pm and played for almost 90 minutes before taking a 10 minute intermission. They came back on stage and played for another 30 minutes. We were waiting for an encore but i guess because of the 11pm curfew it didnt happen. All in all, it was a great show and well worth the drive from Toronto. Looking forward to a hometown show next year.

Sigur Ros performed last night at Massey Hall to a full house and it was one of the best shows all year. The band had my attention for the whole 90-odd minutes they were on stage. The band started out slow, almost in complete darkness, and picked up the pace. They would again slow things down only to erupt and send waves of beautiful noise towards us. My favourite part of the night was the encore. Illgresi was beautifully performed and Gobbledigook, at the request of Jonsi, had us all standing up and clapping along throughout the whole song. For the finale huge plumes of confetti fell upon us like snow.

I made my way to the Music Hall last week to catch the Final Fantasy show. Opening the show was Nico Muhly, Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Nadia Sirota. They all took turns doing eachothers’ songs and played for alot longer than i had expected. Around 90 minutes. After them was Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy. He played for about an hour doing a mixture of old songs and some news ones that are on his two new EPs coming out this fall.

Kathleen Edwards played the Phoenix last week. She’s on tour in support of her new album, “Asking For Flowers“. Opening the show around 8pm was Justin Rutledge. “No photography, No Audio, No Video”. The signs were posted just before the doors opened which sucked since Okkervil River are totally cool with taping and according to The New Porno’s management, they have no strict rules about it. Oh well. I only stayed (and went?) for Okkervil River. It’s too bad they were not in town on their own tour. They played a great set though. The sound was ok and the crowd was pretty big. Although it seemed to be more of a NP’s crowd. Anyways, here’s hoping for OR to return soon and play at a better venue, maybe The Music Hall.
