The Tragically Hip - 2006-10-26 Phoenix Concert Theater - Toronto, ON

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

Well, not much else to say. The fourth and final night wih The Hip at the Phoenix. As always, the show rocked. Gord was very animated tonight. The sound was great. I think the vocals were actually the best on this night than they were on the other three. The song 38 Years Old was played for only the second time in 13 years, the first being back in June at the Fort York show. Enjoy.

The Tragically Hip - 2006-10-23 Phoenix Concert Theater - Toronto, ON

The Hip’s second show at the Phoenix topped the first. Most noticeably was the crowd. It was a much more enthused crowd than that of night one. There was more singing and cheering and the general mood seemed alot lighter than Sunday’s show. To my ears the band sounded better tonight aswell. Gord’s vocals seemed alot clearer to me tonight than they did lastnight. They played the entire new album, again, as expected, but changed up the older songs. A few highlights were Pigeon Camera and Titanic Terrarium. As for the new songs, they continue to sound better each night.

Night 1 of this weeks 4 night stand at the Phoenix. The Hip are doing a short four city tour in promotion of their latest cd release “World Container”. It’s also serving as a warm up to their upcoming Canadian Winter Tour beginning in January. The show was very good and the new songs sound great live. The main set included 20 songs followed by an encore of 2 songs. Gord was his usual self onstage doing his rants, random gestures, and playing with the mic stand.

The Long Winters made their way back to Toronto lastnight. They are touring in support of their new album “Putting The Days To Bed”. The band took the stage around 11pm and played until around 1am. The mood was good and it showed. John was very talkative and was joking back and forth with the medium sized crowd of around 150 people. The sound tonight was very good throughout the whole night. What Made Milwaukee Famous and Menomena opened the show. Both bands played very good sets aswell.

The Raconteurs - 2006-09-30 Metropolis - Montreal, QC

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

Spent the weekend in Montreal with a bunch of friends. Most of us dont remember too much, but what we do remember is The Raconteurs on Saturday night. It was my first time at the Metropolis, located on the east side of town in the “red light” area. The building looks to be quite old but inside the venue was faily nice. The floor was a decent size as well as the balcony above. The show started with Dr. Dog at 8.30pm. I wasnt familiar with the band so I dont know anything about them, but they did do an ok job. Their set lasted about 40 minutes or so. At about 9.40pm The Raconteurs took the stage. The band all seemed very happy. The crowd was into it, although the crowds here in Toronto seem to be louder. Although I cannot compare the sound with any other night at the Metropolis, to my ears (and mic’s) it was very good. The band played for 80 minutes and did 13 songs, 3 of which were covers. The two songs that stand out to me are “Bang Bang” and “Blue Veins”. Both very long renditions with the latter having some great guitar work by Mr. White.

Setlist:
01 Hands Intro
02 Intimate Secretary
03 Level
04 Hands
05 Together
06 5 On The 5
07 It Aint Easy (Ron Davies)
08 The Bane Rendition > Store Bought Bones
09 Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (Nancy Sinatra)
10 Broken Boy Soldier
11 (encore break)
Encore:
12 Headin’ For The Texas Border (Flamin’ Groovies)
13 Steady, As She Goes
14 Yellow Sun
15 Blue Veins
