RHCP – 2006-09-25 Air Canada Centre – Toronto, ON

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

My first time seeing this band aswell. I really wish i had caught a show back in the early 90’s, but i was probably too young then. Anyways, their stage setup was pretty cool. I liked the moving screens and the wall of lights they had behind them and above them out to centre ice. They played for two hours and knocked out 23 songs and jams. The highlight for me was John Frusciante singing “For Emily” solo. He also played about 3 or 4 riffs from some great rock songs as intros into their own songs. All in all, it was a pretty good show, not sure if id go see them again though.
Setlist:
01 Intro Jam
02 Cant Stop
03 Dani California
04 Scar Tissue
05 Charlie (with Marcel from Mars Volta on bongos)
06 Fortune Faded
07 21st Century
08 Blood Sugar Sex Magik
09 Parallel Universe
10 For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her (Simon & Garfunkel)
11 Snow (Hey, Oh)
12 Nobody Weird Like Me
13 Over The Hills And Far Away tease (Led Zeppelin) > Wet Sand (fades out)
XX London Calling tease (The Clash) > Right On Time (missing)
14 Flea Solo
15 Dont Forget Me
16 Tell Me Baby
17 Jam > Californication
18 By The Way
19 (encore break)

Mars Volta – 2006-09-25 Air Canada Centre – Toronto, ON

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

This was my first time seeing the Mars Volta. Im really looking forward to seeing them again on their next tour. Hopefully at a better venue. First off, Cedric was sick so there was no vocals during the show at all. But, John Frusciante played with them for their whole set. He fit in quite well. Omar was almost like a conductor at an orchestra. He would kneel down when it was time to play quietly. Very interesting to watch. Their set was 48 minutes long.

Setlist:
01 Fistful Intro
02 Interstellar Overdrive
03 Rapid Fire Tollbooth
04 Jam
05 Juan Solo
06 Roulette Outro (extended)

Virgin Festival – 2006-09-10 – Day 2

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

Day 2 of the festival, i thought, was better. The show was running ahead of schedule today so there was no fear of having to cut Broken Social Scene’s set short. We arrived about 3pm to find out that Wolfmother was going on about 20 minutes earlier than we had thought so we watched their performance from the Bacardi tent. They rocked. We stayed in the Bacardi tent through Sam Roberts’ set aswell. Then moved down to the stage for The Strokes. I enjoyed their set. They did alot of older tunes than the last time I saw them which was cool. They were onstage for about 50 minutes and did 14 songs.

Setlist:
01 Is This It
02 Redlight
03 The Modern Age
04 Someday
05 Heart In A Cage
06 12:51
07 New York City Cops
08 Hard To Explain
09 Killing Lies
10 Last Nite
11 Ask Me Anything
12 The Ize Of The World
13 Barely Legal
14 Reptilia

After The Strokes was the band we were all waiting for, The Raconteurs. They stormed the stage and never looked back. They played an intense set that was extremely loud. They are totally different onstage compared to the album. Their set was 11 songs which lasted an hour. Im almost positive that I took a few years off the lifespan of my eardrums during that hour.

Setlist:
01 Intro > Intimate Secretary
02 Level
03 Steady, As She Goes
04 Together
05 Yellow Sun > Miss Judy’s Farm (Faces)
06 Bane Rendition > Store Bought Bones
07 Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (Sonny Bono)
08 Broken Boy Soldiers
09 Blue Veins
10 Headin’ For The Texas Border (Flamin’ Groovies)
11 Hands

Virgin Festival – 2006-09-09 – Day 1

Published by dcaley under Audio Downloads, Live Music, Reviews

It was a chilly day on the island for day 1 of the first annual Virgin Festival. The rain did hold off and late afternoon the sun did make it out from behind all the clouds. We arrived around 2.30pm just before the Hidden Camera’s set. We watched this one from the Beer Tent. The next band we checked out was The Dears. Really good set by them, wish I had of recorded it. After wandering around for a bit and a stop at the Bacardi Tent, we made our way down to the stage for Muse, Gnarls Barkley, Kid Koala, and The Flaming Lips.

By this time the show was running well behind schedule. Muse came out and did a pretty decent set. Not a big fan of theirs, but I like a few songs. They were on stage for just under an hour.

Setlist:
01 Knights Of Cydonia
02 Hysteria
03 Supermassive Black Hole
04 Bliss
05 Starlight
06 New Born
07 Map Of The Problematique
08 Time Is Running Out
09 Plug In Baby
10 Stockholm Syndrome

Up next was supposed to be a half hour set by Kid Koala but since everything was running late he got bumped. Gnarls Barkley came out and played for almost an hour. It was decent. Along with Danger Mouse and C-Lo there were about 10 other people on stage dressed in karate uniforms aswell.

Setlist:
01 Go Go Gadget Gospel
02 Who Cares?
03 The Boogie Monster
04 Just A Thought
05 St. Elsewhere
06 There Is An End (The Greenhornes)
07 Gone Daddy Gone
08 The Last Time
09 Crazy
10 Transformer
11 Storm Coming
12 Smiley Faces

Kid Koala finally got his turn to take the stage. Albeit only for about 20 minutes. His makeshift set was done infront of the Flaming Lips’ crew that was rushing to get everything setup. He spun about 10 records and then was done.

Finally, the Flaming Lips take the stage at 10:30pm. 45 minutes late. What an amazing show they put on. This was my first time seeing them and it’s too bad they were limited to 30 minutes because of the 11pm noise curfew. There was about 10 dancers in alien costumes on one side and 10 Santa Claus’ on the other. They threw out big yellow balls to the crowd as well as streamers and other stuff. Wayne came out in his bubble and rolled ontop of the crowd for a bit. One would think that the people running the Virgin Festival would have noticed they were way behind and trimmed the earlier acts. Instead the headliner, which many people were only there to see, got to play 30 minutes.

Setlist:
01 Intro
02 Race For The Prize
03 Free Radicals
04 Yoshimi Part 1 & 2
05 Vein Of Stars
